Diamondhead Construction Case Studies
MAJOR OIL COMPANY
Problem: Leaking rivets on three 120’ diameter x 40’ high oil storage tanks.
The traditional seam sealer was an ineffective repair solution to stop the leaking.
Diamondhead Solution: Solvent cleaned and sandblasted the leaking areas. We applied
Belzona Super E-Metal Epoxy with fiberglass cloth and top-coated the Belzona with Sherwin
Williams Steel-Seam Epoxy Seam sealer.
INDEPENDENT OIL TERMINAL
Problem: State environmental laws required the earthen containment area around
oil storage tanks to be impermeable.
Diamondhead Solution: Performed site work to grade area to an oil/water separator,
installed Bentomat GL Mat, seamed with bentonite clay and covered with 12” of crushed stone for ballast.
INDEPENDANT HEATING OIL DISTRIBUTOR
Problem: A concrete containment for oil storage tanks had several cracks in one area.
Typically, the cracks would be treated individually with various repair procedures but they were so
numerous it would have been far too costly.
Diamondhead Solution: We filled the cracks with dry aggregate and installed an impermeable
membrane over the area. The membrane was Belzona 3111 reinforced with fiberglass cloth which effectively
sealed the cracks and is flexible enough to move with the expansion and contraction of the concrete.
SELF-STORAGE FACILITY
Problem: Leaks at the standing seam metal roof flashing.
Diamondhead Solution: Installed a flexible liquid membrane over the existing flashing,
preventing water infiltration.
CHEMICAL MANUFACTURING PLANT
Problem: A waste storage pad with an existing self-leveling epoxy coating intact had
failed expansion joints which represented a threat of permeability if there was a leak on the pad.
Diamondhead Solution: Cut out the old expansion joints, reformed with Belzona 4111 Epoxy
Mortar and installed Belzona Chemical Resistant Elastomer.
CHEMICAL MANUFACTURING PLANT
Problem: The paint on the exterior of three chemical storage tanks was peeling badly.
Diamondhead Solution: Waterblasted entire exteriors and applied an Epoxy Primer and topcoat.
LONG DISTANCE TELEPHONE COMPANY
Problem: Three chillers badly corroded on the tube sheets.
Diamondhead Solution: Sandblasted tube sheets, leveled out pitted areas with areas with
Belzona 1121 Paste Grade Epoxy and coated entire tube sheet.
LUXURY OFFICE SUITES
Problem: Cooling tower pan corroding.
Diamondhead Solution: Waterblasted and scarified to remove all corrosion and coated with Sherwin
Williams 235 Epoxy.
INDEPENDENT OIL COMPANY
Problem: Sheet piling along East River dock was badly corroding.
Diamondhead Solution: Built a timber barge and encapsulate with poly screening. Working
the tide, we sandblasted from mean low water to mean high tide and removed existing coating and corrosion.
We tested the steel surface for chloride density and removed chlorides from the steel with a mixture of water
and Chlor-rid. We then re-tested for the presence of chlorides and applied two coats of Sherwin Williams 154
Splash Zone.
RESIN MANUFACTURER
Problem: One side of the warehouse roof was badly leaking.
Diamondhead Solution: Removed existing roofing and rotted plywood, replaced rotted top plate,
installed new plywood and installed a Seal O Flex Liquid Roofing Membrane System.
PHARMECEUTICAL EQUIPMENT MANUFACTURER
Problem: Concrete floor in the manufacturing testing had to be dust free.
Diamondhead Solution: Blast Trac-ed (shot blasted) the surface to remove the concrete sealer
and provide an adhesion anchor pattern. We installed high-end Epoxy floor coating in two coats on off-hours.
MANUFACTURING PLANT
Problem: A process building with wooden floors had structural integrity issues in various areas.
Walkways in the building had to be brought up to new OSHA standards.
Diamondhead Solution: Removed bad areas of floor, reinforced where necessary and installed
pressure-treated plywood. We also installed 2x4 railings at walkways.
PLANT MAIN OFFICE BUILDING
Problem: Water infiltration through all walls was peeling interior paint and causing efflorescent.
Diamondhead Solution: Water-blasted exterior walls to remove surface contamination and applied two
coats of Sherwin Williams Con-Flex Waterproofing.
OIL COMPANY
Problem: 110’ diameter floor of an oil storage tank was “pitted” and beyond installing steel patch
plates.
Diamondhead Solution: Installed a fiberglass reinforced polyester hand layup system over the existing
floor to provide strength and arrest any further corrosion.
COGENERATION POWER PLANT
Problem: Annual painting program.
Diamondhead Solution: Performed re-paint projects based on yearly budget. Prepared and coated various
steel structures that were peeling or in need of an additional coat of paint.
MAJOR OIL COMPANY
Problem: Facility cooling tower had reached the end of its useful life and needed replacement.
Diamondhead Solution: Proposed and renovated the existing tower at half the cost of replacement (savings
$100K). Removed corroded supporting structures and replaced with new.
